FACULTY OF CLASSICAL AND MODERN PHILOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICAL STUDIES supported by OPEN SOCIETY INSTITUTE · HIGHER EDUCATION SUPPORT PROGRAM REGIONAL SEMINAR FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING 2005-2008 Contextualizing Classics: Renewal of Teaching Practices and Concepts CALL FOR APPLICATIONS The organizers of the project "Contextualizing Classics: Renewal of Teaching Practices and Concepts", part of the ReSET of OSI HESP, are inviting applicants for participation in this three-year initiative. The project is addressed to young academics of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. According to the goals and the principals of the ReSET program, the organizers will recruit a group of up to 25 young academics from the target region selected on a competitive basis. The competition is open for young faculty and doctoral students involved in teaching and research in the field of the classical studies or some affiliated discipline from the area of social studies and humanities. Prof. in Classics, University of Munich Project Description The project is devoted to the advancement of teaching Classical civilization in the perspective of contemporary cultural and social context, and aims to promote renovation in Classics as a university discipline with inherent interdisciplinary nature and significant potential to contribute to strengthening the awareness of a common cultural legacy. The project’s mission is to contribute to critical rethinking of how we use this potential for the advancement of classical studies at the levels of new theoretical ideas, scholarship, curriculum, and methods of teaching. Team work under the guidance of the resource faculty will be dedicated to the following main topics: 1. Classics at the Dawn of a New Millennium. Rethinking Scholarly Approaches, Academic Curricula and Strategies in Teaching and Research 2. The Post-Gutenberg Age and Classical Literature. Configuration of a New Discipline in Classics Curriculum 3. Politics of Community and Politics of Self. Ethics, Law and Political Theory in European Intellectual Tradition 4. Text and Identity. European Patterns and Experiences in Antiquity and Beyond The program implies three consecutive summer sessions of two-week duration, at which lectures and short courses will be delivered and discussions will be moderated by the resource faculty, and also inter-session activities including carrying out research projects (with the possible involving of students), exchange of scholarly outcome and teaching experience through local meetings and Internet forum discussions. During the second and third year the participants will be expected to engage more actively in intensive individual and group work with the purpose of elaborating research projects and improving their course syllabi. Participants Eligibility Young university teachers or PhD students with teaching experience in relevant disciplines. The participants have to meet the following requirements and commitments: be able to participate in two-week summer sessions in 2005/2006/2007 years; have Internet access; contribute to the intersession activities, including web-based discussions, local workshops, individual and group work with the purpose of elaborating research projects and new course syllabi; make a report on the present state of curricula in their home-institutions and engage in activities striving for meaningful imprоvement of their course syllabi and curricula give presentations on their research in the second and third year of the project During the selection process, the following criteria will be taken into account: o quality of application including completeness; o academic background and professional experience; o qualification referring to the aims of the project; o motivation statement that should display the presumable benefit expected by the applicant according to his/her research interests; o language ability (good command of English).
