Professor Ganna Tolstanova was born into the family of engineers on February 24, 1978 in the city of Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. She graduated with honors from the Faculty of Biology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, in 2000.

From 2000 till 2003, she was a postgraduate student at the Faculty of Biology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (specialty 03.00.13 – Human and Animal Physiology). She defended her Candidate of Sciences dissertation “Ways of Producing Histamine Effect on Gastric Secretion”. In 2011, Ganna Tolstanova defended her Doctor of Sciences dissertation “Biochemical Mechanisms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Pathogenesis” (specialty 03.00.04 – Biochemistry).

From June 2003 till August 2012, she was a member of the Scientific Research Department, holding the positions of a research assistant, researcher, research associate (Faculty of Biology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv).

2006–2009 – Scientific Research Program in the city of Irvine, USA (Department of Pathology, School of Medicine, University of California).

September 2012 – December 2015 – Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry. October 2016 – June 2017 – Associate Professor at the Department of Fundamental Medicine, Research and Academic Center “Institute of Biology”, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

In 2012, Ganna Tolstanova was awarded the rank of research associate.

Since September 2017, she has been the Professor at the Department of Supramolecular Chemistry (Institute of High Technologies, Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv). She was awarded the academic rank of Professor in April 2019.

December 2015 – May 2021 – Head of the Scientific Research Department, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Professor Tolstanova has authored over 100 academic publications, supervised 4 Candidates of Sciences (Biology) and 1 PhD dissertations.

Winner of the State Prize in Science and Technology (2013).

Head of the Council of Young Scientists at the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv, Member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (2014–2019), Member of the Physiological Society (UK). Member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers Pharmacology, Ukrainskyi biokhimichnyi zhurnal.

She is married and has two daughters.
