Dutch Foundation for Eastern European Projects (STOEP)

19.01.2004
The Foundation for Eastern European Projects (STOEP) encourages the relationship between East and West. It organises projects and maintains contacts with Eastern Europe, which has to result in an exchange of knowledge and the conducting of supportive activities. For twenty years, it has been organising projects (primarily exchange projects) in the fields of education and culture.

The organisation participates in and supports activities to promote social and political awareness, and it organises projects involving health and well-being. Although it is definitely not a relief organisation, it has sometimes devoted its efforts to assistance campaigns, for instance Geef ze de Vijf, a Dutch campaign carried out in 1997 that generated more than one hundred thousand guilders to aid the sick, handicapped, elderly and street children in Varna and also the people living in Kamenar, a Romany (gypsy) village.

Tourism and religion are also important. Although the foundation itself organises no actual projects in these fields, it helps others to establish them.

STOEP works with a large group of volunteers who are interested in Eastern Europe. Until now, the foundation has been most involved with Bulgaria and has maintained intensive contacts with this country ever since 1978. A second country receiving a great deal of its attention, especially in terms of educational projects, is Albania. The organisation believes Bulgaria, Albania and Macedonia to be the three forgotten sisters in the European family, and it is for this reason that they focus their efforts here.
